Disc herniation is often seen in younger individuals, typically from their teens to 20s. It is mainly caused by strain on the lower back from sports, leading to the deterioration and damage of the intervertebral discs. It is particularly common in those who engage in intense sports or muscle training.

The intervertebral disc plays a crucial role, absorbing about 70% of the shock applied to the spine. Therefore, the risk of herniation is high in young people involved in activities or jobs that place excessive strain on the spine.

Symptoms and Characteristics of Disc Herniation in Young people
Disc herniation often begins with sudden low back pain. Depending on the degree and location of the herniation, symptoms may gradually change. In younger individuals, symptoms may appear suddenly or progress chronically over time.

Because symptoms sometimes improve temporarily with rest and pain relievers, young patients may underestimate the severity and simply opt to“wait and see.” As a result, the condition can worsen and lead to an acute and severe episode, such as a sudden onset of debilitating low back pain.

Disc degeneration actually begins as early as the 20s. When a disc has degenerated, even a relatively minor impact can cause small tears.Smoking, which reduces blood flow, is also considered a risk factor for disc herniation.
Some people are inherently more prone to tears in the intervertebral discs.
In cases where teenagers develop disc herniation, a constitutional or genetic predisposition is often suspected.
