Column How to Address Chronic Back Pain: Does that Type of Pain Require Surgery or not?
April 28, 2023
low back pain is the result of everyday fatigue accumulated in the lower back, which tends to cause muscles to tense and stiffen, resulting in a deep, dull pain that persistently lingers over a long period of time. Unlike acute low back pain, it is unlikely that the pain will disappear all of a sudden or heal altogether.

Addressing chronic low back pain
Treatment methods for back pain differ depending on the origin of chronic back pain.
Conservative treatment
If chronic stress placed on muscles and fascia due to poor posture or other causes persists for too long, this will in turn lead to poor circulation and pain in the muscles, in which case heat therapy and stretching may be used to improve blood circulation. In addition, improving one’s lifestyle habits can also be quite effective against chronic low back pain.
Surgery
One of the causes of chronic back pain is deformation of the intervertebral discs, misalignment or deformation of the spine, or inflammation of the intervertebral joints. In this case, lumbar spine disorders such as disc herniation or spinal canal stenosis can be diagnosed using an MRI scan.
If symptoms are severe, different surgical procedures (herniectomy, the LOVE procedure, spinal fusion, etc.) may be performed to remove the herniated area or, under general anesthesia, drill out a portion of the lumbar vertebral arch, remove the ligamentum flavum that is pressing on the nerve or the enlarged intervertebral joint, and fix the unstable spine.
Treatment at our clinic
Recent studies have shown that the underlying cause of pain may be concealed by disc deformation. As the disc degenerates, disc herniation develops, the spine becomes unstable, and muscles and fascia may become excessively fatigued as a result of supporting the disc, resulting in pain.
It is our belief at our clinic that pain and inflammation can be effectively prevented if the disc deformation is kept in check.
The Cellgel method performed at our clinics repairs disc damage and restores disc function by replenishing the water content of the nucleus pulposus inside the disc.
The treatment is performed under local anesthesia, is less invasive on the body, and can be performed as a day treatment.
