Column Treatment Progress Report No.2: A Patient Who Became Unable to Walk Due to a Traffic Accident and Recovered Enough to Return to Work After the Cellgel Method Treatment

March 1, 2023

The patient

A male patient in his 40s

Treated in October. Approximately 4 months have passed since treatment.

Symptoms and treatments to date

This patient showed signs of disc herniation in all intervertebral discs from L1/2 to L5/S (as indicated by the red frame).

The Celgel Method was performed at a total of five disc levels:
L1/2, L2/3, L3/4, L4/5, and L5/S1.

Post-Treatment Progress

The table below shows the patient’s self-assessed pain levels

(0=No pain at all, 10=Worst imaginable pain).

Below are comments from the patient obtained during aftercare follow-up contacts:

1 Week Post-Treatment: Overall pain was feeling easier, but the patient was still concerned about his lower limb pain.

1 Month Post-Treatment: The pain had completely resolved, and the patient was able to carry out daily activities without difficulty.

3 Months Post-Treatment: The patient felt that the treatment was effective and had a clear outlook for returning to work.

Note on Effectiveness: While individual results vary, symptoms typically improve within 3 weeks to 3 months after treatment.

This patient had been experiencing frequent episodes of acute low back pain since a young age. It is believed that cracks in the intervertebral discs existed prior to the accident, leading to recurrent disc herniation.

The traffic accident likely placed significant stress on the lumbar spine, worsening the condition to the point of causing difficulty with walking.

We are pleased that the treatment successfully improved the patient’s Quality of Life (QOL).

* Please note that treatment outcomes vary among individuals, and the same results cannot be guaranteed for all patients.

Supplementary Information on the Cellgel Method

Cost of the Cellgel Method:
¥1,320,000 / 1 site (tax included)
to ¥1,760,000 / 5 sites (tax included)

Risks and Side Effects:

Temporary pain may occur after treatment.

Nerve injury is theoretically possible due to the nature of the procedure, but no such cases have been reported in our own experience or in published studies.

Extremely rare risk of allergic reaction to local anesthetic.

Symptoms may temporarily worsen for 1–2 weeks after treatment, believed to be due to decompression effects of the implant pulling on surrounding tissue.

If the disc is severely collapsed or nearly gone, treatment may not be possible.

The physician will discuss suitable treatment options with each patient depending on their condition.
