1. Deformations of the Bones and Nerve Inflammation
Poor posture, aging, or the aging process can lead to deformities of the lumbar spine and intervertebral discs, or inflammation of the sacroiliac joint. These various structural issues may result in pain, numbness, or muscle weakness.
Related conditions: Lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spinal canal stenosis, spondylolysis, lumbar osteoarthritis, sacroiliac joint inflammation.
2. Poor Blood Circulation
Muscles maintain flexibility through repeated contraction and relaxation. While muscles normally tense when exerted, the presence of pain often causes unconscious, continuous muscle tension. This leads to poor blood circulation, which further exacerbates muscle tension, creating a vicious cycle of pain and stiffness.
3. Decline in Overall Muscle Strength
The lower back is an inherently unstable area which relies on surrounding muscles and ligaments for support. However, a decrease in muscle strength due to lack of exercise or the aging process can make muscles prone to fatigue. This in turn can significantly increase the load on the lumbar spine, leading to a breakdown of the spinal alignment(*).
* Alignment: Refers to the arrangement of the bones. Prolonged strain on the lower back or bad habits such as crossing the legs can gradually lead to an alteration in the correct alignment.
4. Disorders Affecting Internal Organs
Diseases affecting the stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, liver, kidneys, or the reproductive organs may cause some pain that will radiate to the lower back, even though it originates in a different site of the body. Because distinguishing internal pain from musculoskeletal pain can be difficult, consulting a doctor is the wise thing to do if you have any doubt.
5. Psychological Stress
Excessive stress can disrupt the autonomic nervous system and activate the sympathetic nervous system, causing blood vessels to constrict. This reduces blood flow to the muscles around the lower back and may trigger pain.
