Prolonged sitting at a desk is frequently listed as being one of the top risks for disc injuries.
However, since discs are mechanically designed to resist compressive forces, healthy discs usually do not sustain damage from the compressive forces that occur during the sitting posture. But if a crack occurs in a damaged disc, the compressive forces generated by the sitting posture may then help push the nucleus pulposus outside the disc, which may in turn be a stress that may contribute to the crack.
As you can see, although deskwork performed with healthy discs present a low risk for disc injuries, deskwork with a damaged disc may be a contributing factor to injury.
